Understanding the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS)
The Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) is an open industry standard maintained by FIRST. It enables SecOps teams, SOC analysts, and vulnerability coordinators to compute severity ratings across software weaknesses and prioritize remediation.
Base Metrics Overview
- Attack Vector (AV): Context enabling access, from Network (remotely exploitable) to Physical.
- Attack Complexity (AC): Environmental conditions or configurations required for exploitation.
- Privileges Required (PR): Pre-requisite authentication required before an attack can succeed.
- Scope (S): Whether the compromise crosses into authorization boundaries beyond the vulnerable component.
- CIA Impact: Direct confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact if successfully exploited.
